New steel flush beam and steel posts installed after removing a load-bearing wall, temporary shoring in place

Steel beams for load-bearing wall removal in Austin.

Opening up a kitchen or living room usually means taking out a load-bearing wall. A steel beam carries that load across a long span with a shallow depth, often flush with the ceiling.

Why steel instead of wood

Steel spans farther with a shallower beam than wood or LVL. That makes flush beams possible, keeps headroom, and allows wider openings with fewer posts. For very wide openings or large window walls, a steel moment frame can eliminate posts entirely.

Engineering and permits

Removing a bearing wall changes how the house carries its loads. An engineer sizes the beam, posts, connections and any new footings, and the City of Austin and surrounding towns generally require a permit for structural work. We work with your engineer or help you get one involved.

Shoring, demo and install

Temporary shoring walls hold the ceiling and roof while the old wall comes out. The beam is brought in, set on posts or pockets, connected and the shoring is removed only once the load path is complete. New footings under point loads are poured where the design calls for them.

Ready for finishes

When the steel is in, wood nailers are attached so drywall and trim can be fastened directly. Through our sister company, Stealth General Contracting, the full remodel can be handled in the same contract.

Questions about residential steel beams

Can any wall be removed?

Most walls can be removed or opened with the right beam and support, but plumbing, ductwork and wiring in the wall, as well as the load it carries, affect the cost. Licensed plumbing, electrical and HVAC relocation is done by licensed trades.

How long does a beam install take?

Once the engineering is approved and the steel is fabricated, many single-beam installs are shored, set and connected in a few days. The bid lists the schedule for your project.
